Progress in a time of profound uncertainty

April 2020, the lost month. As we stand in the doorway to May 2020, the landscape of our lives having changed enormously over the last several months, depending on when your state entered into shelter in place orders, we look forward into an uncertain future. And generally speaking, the majority of us do not like uncertainty. And for the first time in our lives, we are facing uncertainty on every front. Every. Front.

So, what does progress look like, in a time of profound uncertainty?

It will look different for each of us. The most important part of the above phrase: “does” versus “should.” Unfortunately, “should” assumes quite a bit, and we all know that little axiom for the meaning of assume. Equally unfortunate, “should” tends to make us feel badly, seeing only what is not, no matter the subject. And when we feel badly, we don’t move. We get stuck. We don’t progress.

This is why I like does. Does starts with “DO.” Action! Action begets more action. Slow action is STILL action. And acting in our own best interest, is never wasted effort. I am going to borrow a phrase I learned in a class I took (and honestly, am still working through) in April, offered by the amazingly uplifting, inspiring and encouraging Dave S. Anderson. He said: “You have to start before you’re ready.” These words hit me smack in the face, on a number of personal levels. And almost 30 days later, this is how I see them applying, professionally, too: in order to make progress in a time of profound uncertainty, we have to start before we are ready.

I can imagine what you are thinking: What do you mean? How can I start before I am ready? It has been my experience with most big decisions, or important matters in life, we never really feel ready enough. When you add complexity to the mix, it can be even more difficult to start.
