Framing is everything…
“The framing effect is a cognitive bias that impacts our decision making when said in different ways. In other words, we are influenced by how the same fact or question is presented.” -Paul Boyce
Wait, what? Let me give you an example of this that struck me, as I re-watched Netflix’s “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” The show originally aired in January 2019, and I watched it because I had been unable to really get into the best selling book that inspired it. I had tried so many organizing/decluttering methods, in the past, none of which stuck, and all of which felt punitive, overwhelming and worthy of additional, if not permanent, procrastination. Sounds a bit like anything associated with our financial life, right?!? At any rate, life in 2019 was not supportive of the full Kon-Mari Method. Enter a global pandemic, forcing all of us into our houses in new and semi-permanent ways, and there was no more denying change was necessary. So, I went back, because her methods had really clicked for me, as I watched the show. But, this time, I heard her more clearly, and I stopped short, when she said: “the goal is not to force you to get rid of things, the goal is to help you discover which things you have that bring you the most joy.”
Frame. Shift.
Do you see what she did there? The point is to keep the things that make you happy, the by-product is letting go of those things that don’t make you happy. Whoa! This was REVOLUTIONARY. And effective!! This one critical frame shift absolutely changed my decision making and energized resulting action, simply because it was said in a different way. Shifting a process from a negative to positive, from loss to joy. It changed everything.
Clearly, The Universe has a point in mind, because it cannot be a coincidence that today’s page-a-day calendar, derived from Jen Sincero’s award winning book, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life,” offered up one of my favorite quotes from Audrey Hepburn, whom Ms. Sincero describes as “Actress, Icon & Fabulist.” Ms. Hepburn said: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m possible.”
Frame. Shift.
So, why am I writing what may feel like a lesson in vocabulary? Because the words we use matter. The things we tell ourselves matter. They create the frames through which we view everything. It bears repeating that finances/financial matters impact every aspect of our lives. And when they feel impossible, Juno Capital Strategy is here to help you shift the frame. The extent to which we are unable or unwilling to do so, is the extent to which we will continue to be commandeered by our finances, rather than commanding them.
Our finances, and the many related financial matters can feel punitive, overwhelming and worthy of procrastination. The whole thing feels impossible to manage, let alone master.
